“Stop,” I said when Fletcher stalked back and forth between the window and his office. “You’re giving me a headache.”

“That’s easy for you to say,” Fletcher declared as he pivoted. “You didn’t just tell her that her father wanted info on their target and he didn’t want me to tell her while she was with her new friends.”

I leaned back in the chair and kept a hand over my face as I turned the most recent facts over in my head. The target Vienna had gone to see was also the same man who had either taken photos of her or had photos taken of her when she was barely a teenager.

No way her father knew beforehand. I couldn’t see Thad approving that, even for a job. The fact he’d squeezed Fletcher for all the details indicated he was definitely not on board. Since he’d disappeared on Fletcher, I’d headed over to check out the house Thad had been using.

He was gone.

Where? My bet said he was after this pedophilic jackass. Vienna hadn’t said much on the phone, only that they were on their way back. Or would be soon. Fletcher had a tracker up on a screen I could see. It showed her coming closer and closer to us.

I really wanted more details and I wanted them now. But I would wait until we had her back here and our audience was gone. Fletcher spun on his heel to stalk back to the computer. Before he got there, Rick intercepted him and Fletcher let out a squawk of sound.

“What is that?”

“Coffee,” Rick said and Fletcher plucked it from his hand. He knocked back about half of it in one swallow. To be honest, I said nothing and just waited. So did Rick.

“Holy shit,” Fletcher let out a breath then shook his head. “That’s loaded coffee.”

“A generous measure of Kahlúa. Vienna will be here soon and she doesn’t need to worry about you vibrating at the speed of light.”

Fletcher glared at him but Rick was so placid in his declarations.

“She also doesn’t need to worry that her father scared you this bad.”

“I’m man enough to admit to my terrors.” The indignant sniff actually made me laugh.

“Yes, you are,” I assured the hacker. He wasn’t afraid to admit any emotion. He wore all of them like a neon-colored hair shirt that we could see for miles. “You’re also safe. We’re not leaving you alone, even here.”

Rick nodded his agreement. It had been Rick who talked Fletcher down from his super sonic speed earlier, panicking about what he’d told Thad.

After the first cup of coffee, Rick brought Fletcher a second one, as well as offered to get me a first. I passed on it. If he started dosing Fletcher with melatonin on top of the alcohol, I better stay coherent.

As it was, Fletcher did calm down from his semi-violent outbursts. At least he did until an alarm sounded. “Yes,” he said abruptly as he stood. “She’s back.”

In a snap, both Rick and Fletcher took off toward the garage.
